Jakarta (ANTARA) - Amino acids in fish can help children grow well and prevent the negative impacts of stunting, according to the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN).

BKKBN head Hasto Wardoyo stated in a statement on Tuesday that consuming fish, particularly those without scales such as catfish and eel, is highly beneficial for children.

"Fish is rich in amino acids, which are essential for children's brain development," he added.

During his visit to Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, on Sunday, he emphasized the seriousness of the stunting problem. Stunted children often have low intellectual capability, lack productivity, and become more vulnerable to disease as adults.

To prevent these negative effects, children should consume fish and other animal proteins, such as at least two eggs per day, during the first 1,000 days of life. Animal proteins support optimal development of children's cartilage, muscles, and skeletal systems.

While animal proteins are crucial, a balanced diet that includes sufficient quantities of vegetables, fruits, and milk is also necessary for healthy growth.

In Kulon Progo, the Foster Fathers for Stunted Children (BAAS) Program is working to support stunting eradication efforts, according to Sri Budi Utami, head of the Kulon Progo Health Office.
