Jakarta (ANTARA) - The completion of Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA) negotiations is one of Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) priorities, Coordinating Minister for the Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said.

"The completion of the ICA-CEPA is one of the president's priorities, in addition to encouraging the implementation of Indonesia - Canada halal certificate cooperation," he said, according to a press release issued by the Coordinating Ministry for the Economic Affairs on Saturday (May 27).

According to the press release, he made the statement in a bilateral meeting with Canadian International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business, and Economic Development Minister Mary Ng in Detroit, the United States, on Friday (May 26).

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting as well as the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) Ministerial Meeting.

Hartarto’s statement regarding the ICA-CEPA was a response to Ng's hope that the two countries can immediately complete the negotiations on the economic partnership and realize halal certificate cooperation for Canadian products.

The representatives of the governments of Indonesia and Canada will have the 5th Round of ICA-CEPA negotiations in Ottawa, Canada, on May 29 to June 2, 2023.

The realization of the comprehensive trade agreement and halal certificate cooperation is expected to improve economic relations between the two countries, especially in trade and investment sectors.

In the meeting, the two ministers also talked about the establishment of a task force to facilitate practical and pragmatic bilateral economic cooperation.

The Canadian minister also expressed her party’s interest in collaborating with Indonesia regarding the critical mineral sector.

"We have discussed with (a mining company) Vale Indonesia and we see a cooperation potential in the implementation of mining value chain technology and inputs in accordance with (Mining Association of Canada’s) TSM (Towards Sustainable Mining) initiative," she noted.

She congratulated Indonesia on its success in holding the 2022 G20 Presidency and 2023 ASEAN Chairmanship.

Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang and Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Rosan Roeslani were also present at the meeting.
