Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has outlined the government's efforts to revive the national aviation industry post the pandemic at the 2023 International Civil Aviation Organization's Global Implementation Support Symposium (ICAO GISS).

One of the fundamental policies pursued by the government to survive the COVID-19 pandemic was to balance policies between controlling COVID-19 and keeping the economy moving, including aviation services.

"As an archipelagic country, flight services cannot stop supporting connectivity and the sustainability of public activities," he said as quoted in a statement received here on Tuesday.

Sumadi, according to the statement, was one of the speakers at the symposium, which is held in Seoul, South Korea, and themed “Working Together for an Innovative and Sustainable Global Aviation Community.”

He informed that several policies were implemented by the government along with aviation stakeholders to realize safe, comfortable, and healthy flight services by implementing a number of health protocols.

"As a result, in 2022, the national aviation industry began to improve and showed a positive trend," he said.

However, there are still several post-pandemic problems that must be resolved, such as the high public demand for aircraft services that is not balanced with the availability of aircraft fleets, he added.

He emphasized that there are still many airports that need to improve their capacity and service quality.

Therefore, he said he is hoping for global support and collaboration in the civil aviation industry through ICAO.

The collaboration can be carried out in many ways, such as funding to support development that aligns with ICAO's strategic goals.

"For this reason, we are seeking to bolster partnerships with several countries. Given the limited capacity of the state budget (APBN), we open opportunities for cooperation through public-private partnerships," he said.

ICAO GISS is a conference of the global civil aviation community initiated by ICAO in collaboration with member countries.

The 2023 ICAO GISS is being held in collaboration with South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport in Seoul from May 30–June 1, 2023.
