We will develop a single authority in Borobudur to make its tourism, commercial, and conservation management more comprehensive.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is preparing a revitalization plan for the Borobudur Temple Complex in Central Java by collaborating with other ministries and conservation experts from UNESCO, according to Deputy Minister II of State-Owned Enterprises Kartika Wirjoatmodjo.

"We are now discussing and consulting its conservation with the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry as well as conservation experts, including from UNESCO, to ensure (that Borobudur) will become a comprehensive tourism site that can maintain its heritage," Wirjoatmodjo said at the Borobudur Temple Complex in Magelang on Sunday (June 4, 2023).

The development and management of the heritage tourism destination need a good conservation approach, he said, adding that his ministry will enhance the integration of tourism management and conservation aspects, including spiritual values.

"We will develop a single authority in Borobudur to make its tourism, commercial, and conservation management more comprehensive," he informed.

The deputy minister said his ministry has already prepared an overview of the Buddhist temple site’s revitalization, which includes improvement in area arrangement, a micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) center, and tourists' route.

The ministry is also planning to reposition Borobudur as a spiritual destination and allow visitors to meditate at the temple as well as establish a museum in the future, he added.

Though the budget needs and sources for the revitalization have not been determined yet, Wirjoatmodjo said that his ministry is targeting to complete the revitalization concept by next September to October.

"(The budget) can be disbursed from the state budget or the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, and we can collaborate with private parties for other aspects. We are now finalizing the concept first," the deputy minister said.

Meanwhile, Maya Watono, director of the marketing and tourism program of state-owned tourism holding PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (InJourney), said the Borobudur Temple development will focus on five main pillars.

"Heritage, spiritual, education, conservation, and economic impact are the five pillars we will advance. The future development (of Borobudur Temple) will be based on the five pillars," Watono added.
