"The press activities performed should demonstrate the interest of the whole nation rather than of certain partisans or capital owners," Rahayu remarked during the "Kick Off Workshop on the 2024 Elections Coverage" at the council's hall, Jakarta, on Monday.
Such a practice is of the essence to realize the idea of conducive, honest, and fair elections, she affirmed.
In her speech, Rahayu noted that journalists can take several steps in order to prioritize the public interests, including by providing accurate and credible information that will, in turn, enhance the public's intellectual power.
Rahayu also called on the Indonesian press to neither exaggerate nor reduce the information they serve to the public.
She deemed this step as necessary in order to ensure that the people are provided with adequate information.
Earlier, the chairperson invited all parties, ranging from political parties, stakeholders, the society, and journalists, to collaborate in the efforts to ensure the smooth running of the 2024 elections.
"Once again, the Press Council would like to invite all parties to collaborate and cooperate. We invite political parties, stakeholders, the society, and journalists, both media-based and community-based, to join forces to support the success of the 2024 elections," she affirmed.
She expressed belief that all elements of the nation have a vital role to play in creating a better democratic ecosystem by jointly ensuring that the 2024 elections will run smoothly.
"To that end, we expect all parties to work in synergy, so we can realize the democracy we have been dreaming of," she affirmed.
