The political parties must understand the need for this information
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Press Council has underlined the need for building a shared perspective on election reporting among political parties, law enforcement agencies, election organizers, stakeholders, and press personnel.

"We invite political parties, law enforcement, and stakeholders to sit together, including the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), to have a common perspective on election reporting," Press Council chairperson Ninik Rahayu said here on Monday.

At the "Kick-Off Workshop on 2024 Election Coverage," Rahayu said that related parties need to build a shared perspective about the speed of news being distributed.

"There were complaints on (the coverage of) important news, where the media crew wanted to report it, but needed confirmation (from political parties) first," she informed.

According to her, the publication of news must not take long in the digital era, but there has been no common consensus between the press personnel and political parties yet.

"The political parties must understand the need for this information," she stressed.

Earlier, Press Council member Totok Suryanto said that the workshop, which was attended by 11 Press Council constituents, will be held at 24 locations representing all Indonesian provinces.

Rahayu said that the workshop is aiming to build collaboration among political parties, election organizers, society, and press personnel, so that news about the 2024 elections remains balanced, accurate, and adheres to the journalistic code of ethics.

The workshop is expected to prepare press personnel so they can avoid producing confusing news, she added.

Rahayu also reminded all members of the press to carry out their role as instruments of democracy by prioritizing the interests of the people while covering next year's elections.

"The press should show the interests of all citizens, not being partisans so that our elections remain conducive, truthful, and just," she said.
