To obtain the support, the ministry delegated its Deputy for Coordination of International Economic Cooperation Edi Prio Pambudi to meet with Sarah Chidgey, the Deputy Secretary of National Security and Criminal Justice Group at the Australian Attorney-General's Department in Canberra on Wednesday (June 21).
"The meeting was held with the objective of seeking support from Australia for Indonesia's full membership in the Financial Action Task Force," Pambudi noted in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
Currently, Indonesia still holds the status of an observer and is the only country of the G20 that has yet to obtain full membership in the FATF.
The task force is an intergovernmental agency formed by member countries of G7, and it works to set legal, regulatory, and operational standards in an effort to eradicate money laundering practices and terrorism funding as well as tackle various threats to the integrity of the international financial system.
During the meeting, the Indonesian representative emphasized Indonesia's commitment to bolstering its efforts in combating money laundering, terrorism funding, and other financial crimes.
Deputy Secretary Chidgey, for her part, acknowledged Indonesia's significant progress in its efforts to implement comprehensive steps to fight money laundering and terrorism funding.
She also highlighted Indonesia's staunch commitment to strengthening the integrity of the financial system that is in line with the standards set by FATF.
Hence, the Australian representative expressed her country's full support for Indonesia to become a full member of the task force.
She affirmed that Australia is committed to pushing for the acceptance of Indonesia as a full member of FATF at the task force's plenary meeting on June 23 or the plenary meeting in October at the latest.
