There are at least five sectors that we are currently focusing on right nowJakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry stated that energy and forestry and other land uses (FOLU) sectors have the largest potential to be tapped into for emission reduction until 2030.
"There are at least five sectors that we are currently focusing on right now. The largest is, of course, FOLU, because it is (targeted to contribute) almost 60 percent (of emission reduction), and energy," Deputy Minister for Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong stated during the Indonesia Net-Zero Summit 2023 at the Djakarta Theatre XXI here on Saturday.
Dohong noted that the government is engaged in the forestry, energy, Industrial Process and Product Use (IPPU), waste, and agriculture sectors to reduce emission.
Of the five sectors, forestry and energy are the largest sectors in which emission reduction efforts would be centered in order to reach the Nationally Determined Contribution target, Dohong elaborated.
On September 23, 2022, the Environment and Forestry Ministry, as the National Focal Point of the United Nations Framework Convention, expressed its climate change ambition, as outlined in the Enhanced NDC (ENDC) Indonesia.
Some aspects updated in the ENDC include changes in the NDC target, in which the initial target for emission reduction by 2030 with efforts from the state itself, which was set at 29 percent, was changed to 31.89 percent, he remarked.
For the forestry sector, 60 percent, or 500 Mton CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions, should be slashed down, whereas in the energy sector, the reduction should reach 358 Mton CO2 equivalent, both of which are targeted until 2030.
"It is big, means a lot for the global from our country. The three other sectors are small but need to be worked on," he noted.
Citing the NDC roadmap, Dohong emphasized that in order to reduce emissions by 29 percent as per the target, Indonesia needs at least Rp4,000 trillion (US$265.9 billion) in investment.
Dohong stated that of the total figure, Rp3,000 trillion (US$200 billion) is from the energy sector, which is necessary since new & renewable energy tech is expensive.
"Some Rp4,000 trillion is not a small amount. Even our state budget is only Rp2,000 trillion (US$133 billion) per year," he concluded.
