The weather in Papua is currently dynamic, as reported by the local Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG), Chief of the local disaster mitigation agency (BPBD Papua) William Manderi said in Jayapura on Friday.
"Based on data from the local BBMKG, there are potentials for moderate to heavy rain in some regions from June 30 to July 2 (2023), so this must be a collective vigilance," he added.
Due to the agency's warning, BPBD Papua has asked people to be aware of and understand the paths or signs when vacationing near the coastline and other recreational areas.
"During a long holiday like this, we hope that the residents remain cautious and always be aware of the risks," he said.
He urged vacationers to maintain their health even though the central government has lifted the rule on wearing masks, which was imposed earlier to prevent COVID-19 transmission.
"We hope that people maintain their own health in tourist attractions," he said.
He also asked them to keep public facilities neat and clean.
BMKG on Friday appealed to communities living near the coastline to remain alert for potential high waves of up to four meters from June 30 to July 1, 2023.
"People who live and do activities in coastal areas should be vigilant against high waves," Head of the BMKG's Maritime Meteorology Center Eko Prasetyo said.
Waves reaching heights of four meters are likely to occur in the northern Malacca Strait, northern waters of Sabang, western waters of Aceh, and western waters of the Simeulue-Mentawai Islands, including Sumbawa and Lombok Islands in the east, among others.
