Bangka Belitung Islands (ANTARA) - Indonesia faces three major challenges to the development of the blue economy, according to Leonardo A. A. Teguh Sambodo, an expert staff at the National Development Planning Ministry/National Development Planning Board (Bappenas).

The first challenge is the public and business world's lack of literacy regarding the blue economy development, he said during a press conference on the ASEAN Blue Economy Forum 2023 in Jakarta on Monday.

He stated that the government will continue to encourage literacy, as it is actually one of the starting points of the blue economy.

The second challenge is the underutilization of the blue economy, which must be optimized.

Sambodo noted that Indonesia is currently relying solely on existing sectors, while the potential for mobilizing and creating added value is limited. Therefore, it must broaden its focus to other sectors, such as the blue economy or sustainable green economic recovery.

The government believes that new and renewable energy, biotechnology, and the bio-economy could offer innovative solutions to various developmental problems, including those in coastal areas and the ocean. Consequently, this is one of the government's priorities, he added.

The final challenge is ensuring intergenerational commitment to sustain the development of the blue economy.

Sambodo observed several factors related to marine-related jobs, such as the lack of aquaculture and declining interest among the younger generation, which need to be addressed.

He further emphasized the need to highlight the potential of marine areas for utilization, such as through investment in blue carbon ecosystem conservation.

He highlighted the relevance of this issue, given the increasing awareness among the younger generation regarding sustainability.

The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and the health of ocean ecosystems, according to the World Bank.
