Jakarta (ANTARA) - The younger generation has a strategic role in preserving democracy to realize a safe and advanced country with prosperous people, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nur Wahid has said.

Democracy continues to be maintained in Indonesia, he added, according to a written statement received here on Tuesday.

However, this does not mean that democracy in the country does not have challenges: it needs to be continuously maintained, corrected, and improved.

He made the statement during a meeting with representatives of the Student Executive Board (BEM) of Surabaya Muhammadiyah University and the East Java and Bali Muhammadiyah BEM here on Monday.

He said the strategic role of youngsters, for instance, will be evident in the 2024 General Elections.

The voters in the upcoming elections are dominated by the younger generation, namely millennials (33.60 percent) and Generation Z (22.85 percent), he highlighted.

He reminded youngsters to increase their concern for democracy because if they do not, then Indonesia will be led by those who also do not care about the quality of democracy.

He outlined several steps that can be taken by youngsters to contribute to raising awareness about democracy.

The first step is educating the community so that they understand their rights and power to build quality politics, namely by participating in the 2024 General Elections.

Second, utilizing modern communication mediums, such as social media, to educate each other, exchange insights, and expand networks, not only among young people, but also the society in general.

"That way, the community will have the awareness and be concerned about democracy to improve the current (situation) and the future of their own nation," he explained.

He noted that the struggle of the younger generation for democracy and to build a better nation in the future will be full of challenges. Nevertheless, the younger generation can emulate the struggles of national figures, including ulemas from Muhammadiyah, and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).
