Jayapura (ANTARA) - The Provincial Government of Papua has planned to form a task force to protect the Cycloop nature reserve in anticipation of destructive acts that may damage tree seeds planted in the area.

Head of Forestry and Environment-Papua Office Yan Yap Ormuserai said here Sunday that in carrying out the post-planting activities, the task force would empower local communities.

"The task force will play a crucial role in anticipating damage to the planted tree seeds caused by likely irresponsible acts," he noted.

In the first year, the Cycloop Task Force will have 80 personnel, he said, adding that the provincial government will equip them with supporting facilities, such as drones.

The number of personnel would also be increased in the future.

"Therefore, we are expecting full support from all traditional communities, especially those living in the Cycloop nature reserve, so we all can jointly protect the protected area," he remarked.

Ormuserai then explained that the Cycloop nature reserve could potentially get damaged though the current damage level is still below 10 percent. For that reason, the government continues promoting tree-planting activities as a preventive measure.

"To preserve the area, we will plant 66,666 bamboo tree seeds in an area stretching 60 kilometers along Pasir 6 to Maribu Village," he informed.

The planting activity will be carried out beyond the Cycloop nature reserve, 100 meters from the boundary mark to be precise, he said.

The activity plays a crucial role in protecting the nature reserve from such disasters as floods, landslides, and drought, that may result in severe losses and disruption to the lives of local people.
