We are looking for ways to protect people's data so that it does not become a supply (data source) for AI.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) member Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi has informed that the House is looking for studies that can be used as a basis for preparing an appropriate AI regulation for Indonesia.

"In Indonesia, AI is still at the level of automation, and there is no regulation yet. We are looking for ways to protect people's data so that it does not become a supply (data source) for AI," Rizaldi explained here on Thursday.

According to him, such a regulation is needed to prevent people from being exploited by AI technology.

He said that the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Law does not directly regulate the use of AI.

The law is not enough to regulate rapidly developing AI technologies, such as generative AI that can perform many tasks, for example, ChatGPT and Bard, he explained.

According to him, the Indonesian people may be disadvantaged if AI is abused by irresponsible parties.

Even so, he said that further studies are needed to draft a regulation since AI is still being used in Indonesia as an automation tool.

"We need inputs from institutions, organizations, and the public so that the regulation gap for AI can be found so that we can perfect the law to support Indonesia in becoming a digital nation," Rizaldi added.

At the same discussion, executive director of the Southeast Asia Freedom of Expression Network (SAFENet), Damar Juniarto, said he agreed with Rizaldi.

Indonesia needs a regulation to prevent its citizens from being at a disadvantage when it comes to AI, he observed.

"AI is a technology, and technology is neutral because its function is to advance humans. Hence, a guideline and procedure is needed to prevent AI abuse," he said.

He then expressed the hope that the public can be involved in drafting the regulation on AI in order to make it more inclusive.
