"The (EV) batteries available today are batteries that can only cover a short distance, take a long time to recharge, can catch fire, and are expensive. We should address these issues," he stated after witnessing the processing production of local EV batteries in Malang, East Java, on Friday.
He noted that development of the ecosystem for battery-based EVs in Indonesia has provided new opportunities for the battery industry in the country.
Currently, the nation's talents are investing efforts to conduct research, with the objective of enabling Indonesia to produce its own EV batteries, thereby making the country a leading player in the domestic market, he affirmed.
Furthermore, he urged EV battery producers to put in even greater efforts to make innovations, in addition to ensuring that the products they produce comply with the regulation concerning the domestic component level (TKDN).
Moeldoko, who concurrently serves as chairman of the Electric Vehicle Industry Association (Periklindo), underscored the importance of conducting in-depth research before proceeding to the fabrication phase.
"This obviously constitutes a challenge. However, we should be aware that we have the opportunity to optimize the battery of electric vehicles as a game changer," he pointed out.
On the occasion, the KSP chief had the opportunity to conduct a test ride on an electric motorbike powered by a domestically-produced battery.
Moeldoko also admitted to being impressed on knowing that the battery was produced solely with domestic components.
"Another advantage of this battery is that it does not contain liquid, so it is safe from the risks of fire. Moreover, this battery can cover a distance of further than 100 kilometers. This is a work of the nation's talents. It deserves appreciation," he noted.
