Foreign Minister Marsudi conveyed the statement while attending the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday (September 18).
"It is my honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the ASEAN member states. I am pleased to bring the message that ASEAN is strongly committed to achieve sustainable development in the region," Marsudi stated, as quoted from a release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received here on Tuesday.
"We also recognize the increasingly challenging and uncertain global environment and agree to work together to strengthen our resilience and capabilities against emerging challenges and future shocks, as a way to remain credible and relevant to our people," she affirmed.
At the SDGs Summit, the Indonesian foreign minister emphasized ASEAN's strong commitment to achieving the SDGs' targets.
"On this note, we further extend our commitment to promote complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the 2030 Agenda, or the Complementarities Initiative in short, as well as our work towards the ASEAN Community Vision 2045," Marsudi remarked.
She also highlighted ASEAN's commitment and efforts in advancing sustainable development.
First, Marsudi said, the ASEAN remains steadfast in its work to narrowing the development gap, enhancing the localization of SDGs while continuously empowering the youth, women, elderly people, MSMEs, and migrant workers.
Second, the ASEAN reiterates commitment to work with its partners to mainstream and implement the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific through concrete and practical projects and activities based on its objectives and principles.
"We look forward to continue our work in building a resilient economic architecture, supported by a resilient supply chain, greater connectivity, and accelerated digital transformation," she stated.
Third, the ASEAN is committed to achieving sustainable energy security and to accelerating just and inclusive energy transitions while ensuring energy security, reliability, accessibility, sustainability, resiliency, and affordability.
Fourth, the ASEAN commits to increasing investment in the development of human resources, including in quality education system, improving the regional health system, and boosting infrastructure development and cooperation as well as working to better prevent, prepare, and respond to future pandemics.
"We further commit to scale-up cooperation in disaster risk reduction and address climate change and other environmental issues to support the achievement of a resilient ASEAN Community," Marsudi stated.
"In closing, we reaffirm our support to the strengthening of multilateralism, with the UN at its core, and also reaffirm our belief on its mutually reinforcing nature with regionalism by solidifying adherence to the principles of the UN Charter," she stated.
Furthermore, Marsudi highlighted that the ASEAN will strive for a greater regional cooperation and global partnership to bring the trajectory of SDGs' implementation back on track and look forward to the Summit of the Future in 2024 as an important opportunity to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and to reinvigorate the multilateral system.
