Jakarta (ANTARA) - Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita accentuated the importance of transforming industrial parks into the fourth generation of their kind, or smart eco industrial parks, which prioritize sustainable development, circular economy, and green technology.

While closing the business forum during the 23rd National Meeting of the Industrial Estates Association (HKI) in Bali, on Thursday (September 21), the minister emphasized that industrial parks need to transform in order to boost competitiveness and investment in the sector.

"We hope that all industrial estates, especially HKI members, can slowly transform towards smart eco industrial parks in order to increase competitiveness and investment in the industrial sector," he noted in a statement released by the ministry here on Saturday.

Kartasasmita pointed out that the development of both new and existing industrial parks still encountered numerous challenges for which breakthroughs and synergies had become increasingly necessary to address the problems.

Global issues related to the application of green and sustainable industries have demanded the industrial sector to stick to environmental sustainability and social advancement principles in its growth, he stated.

Meanwhile, Kartasasmita noted that since 2020, the Ministry of Industry had collaborated with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) to implement the Global Eco-Industrial Park Programme (GEIPP).

Currently, he remarked that the MM 2100 Industrial Town, Batamindo Industrial Park, and the Karawang International Industrial City (KIIC) were three industrial parks that are pilot projects of GEIPP.

In addition, the ministry, supported by South Korean Ecosian that is engaged in the green industry, is initiating the implementation of industrial symbiosis by utilizing industrial steam generation at the Krakatau Industrial Estate Cilegon (KIEC) in Cilegon, Banten.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry is conducting inspections in the efforts to control air pollution, especially in the industrial sector.
