Kupang (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi outlined achievements delivered by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in maritime development during the peak commemorative event of the 59th National Maritime Day in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"In his two presidential terms, the president has succeeded in laying down foundations for future maritime development, including by enhancing maritime connectivity through the sea toll program, building networks of energy, downstreaming marine resources, and developing featured marine tourism destinations," he remarked.

He made the statement at the Indonesian Navy's Headquarters VII Kupang.

In the presence of Commander of the Indonesian Forces (TNI) Admiral Yudo Margono, Minister Sumadi noted that President Jokowi had directed Indonesia's maritime development toward a clear goal.

He then expressed belief that by further developing its maritime prowess, Indonesia will eventually succeed in transforming into a sovereign, advanced, and sustainable country.

The minister also stated that under President Jokowi's leadership, Indonesia has become one of the initiators of the establishment of Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum that unites its participating countries to take concrete steps to overcome common challenges, including climate change.

Indonesia recently hosted the 1st High-Level Meeting of the AIS Forum on October 10-11, 2023, in Badung, Bali Province.

According to Sumadi, Jokowi's administration has also made various efforts to expedite the realization of Indonesia's vision to become a global maritime axis, such as through the incorporation of maritime aspects into the 2025-2045 National Long-term Development Plan (RPJPN) and the formulation of related policies.

Furthermore, he remarked that NTT Province had become one of President Jokowi's most-visited regions.

Meanwhile, Acting Governor of NTT Ayodhia Kalake urged the central government to pay special attention to the province, including by providing it with a guideline to properly plan, allocate, and utilize its budget.

Minister Sumadi welcomed the request and said that he would convey it to President Jokowi and the cabinet.

The 59th National Maritime Day in Kupang City was commemorated with various activities, including dance and musical performances, an awards ceremony, a boat decorating competition involving local fishermen, and an open tour on a naval ship.
