"The benefits for Indonesia, considering that Indonesia has almost the same characteristics as Japan, we can take lessons learned from Japan and other IALA member countries to apply navigation technology to maintain shipping safety and protect the maritime environment in Indonesian waters," Director of Navigation of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the ministry Budi Mantoro said in a statement received in Jakarta, Friday.
The directorate general participated in the World-Wide Academy activities in Tokyo, Japan, regarding safety of navigation organized by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA-AISM).
The event has the main objective of improving the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation by contributing to the development and harmonization of navigational aids for shipping (SBNP) throughout the world.
Mantoro remarked that the Indonesian delegation was led by Head of the Type A Class II Teluk Bayur Navigation District Yudhonur Setyaji along with other delegation members, namely Tatang Heryana and Lalu Rano Agiansyah.

"The delegates said that Japan has almost the same number of SBNP as Indonesia as well as the characteristics of being an archipelagic country," Mantoro remarked.
He explained that the seminar was part of a series of the IALA Conference meeting activities. The seminar was an opportunity for Indonesia to learn lessons from Japan and other IALA member countries in the application of navigation technology, with the aim of maintaining shipping safety and protecting the maritime environment in Indonesian waters.
Mantoro said one of the technologies highlighted in the seminar was Japan's use of the internet of things (IoT), allowing the country to maximize the use of resources in an effort to improve shipping safety in its waters.
He explained that the incoming data was processed through several branch offices and the data was forwarded to the head office to be stored and monitored as real-time SBNP data in Japan.
The use of information technology in SBNP supervision is considered to have proven to make it easier for supervisors to monitor the reliability of SBNP and detect if an SBNP is dead or not functioning as it should.
"This new technology can be applied by Indonesia in order to improve shipping safety, especially in the operational and managerial context of SBNP management in Indonesia," Mantoro stated.

After participating in the activity, Indonesia succeeded in convincing the IALA World-Wide Academy to visit Indonesia in 2024. Tthe aim of the visit was to establish cooperation in increasing SBNP's operational and managerial human resource capacity in accordance with international standards.
The ministry is optimistic that through active participation in these activities, Indonesia can continue to contribute to advancing the safety and efficiency of maritime shipping in Indonesia and throughout the world.
"Apart from that, in order to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and IALA, an MoU will be signed between the Directorate General of Sea Transportation and IALA regarding cooperation in increasing human resource capacity and technical cooperation in the field of maritime transportation at the 33rd IMO assembly session in London," Mantoro stated.
IALA-AISM is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that aims to improve the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation by contributing to the development and harmonization of SBNP throughout the world.
