Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is on track to achieve the Forest and Other Land Uses (FoLU) Net Sink 2030 targets, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar stated at the Conference of the Parties 28 (COP28).

The FoLU Net Sink will be achieved when the level of carbon sequestration of the FoLU sector is balanced or higher than the level of emission produced by the sector. It is targeted to be achieved by 2030.

"At the COP28, our priority is to highlight the main results of our climate actions to ensure that we have been on track to achieve the FoLU Net Sink 2030 targets," the minister noted in a statement received here on Friday.

Bakar made the statement in her speech during the inauguration of the Indonesia Pavilion at the COP28 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on Thursday (November 30)

The minister said by ensuring that the journey toward the realization of the FoLU Net Sink 2030 targets is going as planned, Indonesia will be able to maintain control and continue playing a decisive role in achieving the net-zero emissions target by 2060 or sooner.

The FoLU Net Sink 2030, launched during the COP26 in Scotland in 2021, constitutes Indonesia's commitment to dealing with climate change, she stated.

President Joko Widodo signed the document of the targets in October of 2021.

Minister Bakar said she believes that the formulation of Indonesia's FoLU Net Sink 2030 serves as proof of Indonesia's crucial role in supporting substantial negotiations at the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in the last decade.

"The targets outlined in the FoLU Net Sink 2030 are not merely promises written on papers. We have been demonstrating our efforts to achieve them by executing concrete actions on the field," Bakar affirmed.

She highlighted that Indonesia has managed to suppress deforestation more significantly as compared to what other countries had achieved in recent years. Indonesia has been investing steadfast efforts to ensure that the FoLU sector contributes 60 percent to carbon emissions' reduction in Indonesia, she stated.

She then alluded to this year's El Nino global heat phenomenon, saying that Indonesia has been successful in suppressing the impacts of the phenomenon, as evidenced by its success in reducing the total area of peat lands scorched during forest fires to only 16 percent.

In contrast, as much as 34 percent of peat lands in Indonesia had been burnt by forest and land fires in 2015.

Bakar also pointed out that forest and land fires that occurred in Indonesia this year did not produce transboundary haze.

"These achievements were not automatically delivered. Instead, they are the results of our concrete actions on the field aimed at handling climate change," she remarked.

She affirmed that in order to ensure that the FoLU Net Sink 2030 targets will be achieved, the government will continue to make efforts to protect biodiversity, including by revitalizing mangrove areas that account for millions of hectares of lands in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, deemed the efforts made by Indonesia to handle climate change as remarkable, as they were made under collaboration between the government, business actors, and civil society.

"I believe that such a collaboration will help Indonesia succeed in carrying out the mandates given by the COP to preserve nature. As said by Madam minister, Indonesia can be a role model in this context," she stated.
