"Innovation and digitalization are key to increasing productivity and efficiency in the mining industry. Mining companies that can make good use of the (AI) technology will be more competitive," official at the ministry Agus Cahyono Adi stated here on Friday.
He explained that AI can detect potential hazards and give early warning to mine workers.
The innovation "mining eyes" is designed to conduct remote surveillance to minimize contact between workers and hazards in the pit area.
Corporate Communication Superintendent of PT Berau Coal, Rudini Rahim, explained that mining eyes are surveillance tools that integrate CCTV with mining analytics.
"This technology can monitor and report the movement of people and heavy equipment units in the mining area, resulting in more productive and safer operations due to lesser hazard risks in direct contact between human and heavy equipment," Rahim stated.
In addition to mining eyes, a digital innovation called BEATS, which stands for Berau Coal Green Mining System (BeGeMs) Automation Tracking System, is also applied.
The app is used to support supervision and analysis of operational activities in terms of occupational safety, health, and the environment, which was carried out manually.
"With this app, the process of supervising operations of more than 24 thousand workers can be carried out properly," he remarked.
Furthermore, other AI-based technologies include the driving monitoring system (DMS) to supervise the mining area.
DMS has various sensors and cameras to monitor mining vehicle drivers and detect risky actions, such as unsafe driving behavior, fatigue, and excessive speeding.
