“According to the result of BMKG monitoring, three active earthquake zones are visible in West Java from November 1 to December 11, 2023,” BMKG Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, stated in Jakarta on Monday.
He remarked that the three active earthquake zones are in Bogor District, Cianjur (Cugenang Fault), and South Garut Fault.
As for activities in the earthquake swarm zones, the sub-districts of Pamijahan, Leuwiliang, and Nanggung in Bogor District have recorded 33 earthquake swarms, with magnitudes ranging from M1.8 to M4.
“Among the 33 recorded earthquakes, there are three earthquake swarms, with magnitudes ranging from M3.0 to M4.0, which caused several houses to sustain minor damages,” he stated.
He explained that earthquake swarms do not generally cause damage. However, if the earthquake has a shallow center, it can cause damage despite its small magnitude. If the earthquake occurs often, then structural weakening of the houses might occur.
An earthquake swarm is characterized by a series of small-magnitude earthquakes occurring at a very high frequency.
The Cianjur Zone recorded 12 earthquakes, Daryono stated. Six earthquakes occurred with magnitudes ranging from M2.0 to M2.9.
The South Garut Fault Zone has caused eight earthquakes in the districts of Garut and Bandung, with magnitudes ranging from M2.1 to M2.7, some of which are strong enough to be noticeable.
“The solution to the earthquake problem is by building a house with a strong structure, (so) do not cut the cost for cement and a strong column and beam ties,” he stated.
