Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) will form a special team to oversee the national history rewriting project initiated by the Ministry of Culture, to ensure it is carried out properly.

DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said the decision to form the team was made following consultations with the Speaker and discussions with other DPR leaders.

"The DPR will form and assign a team to supervise the history rewriting process, as part of its oversight function," Dasco said in a written statement on Sunday.

He noted that the team will consist of members from Commission III (legal affairs) and Commission X (education and culture), and emphasized that they will carry out their duties professionally.

Dasco expressed hope that this supervision will prevent the Ministry of Culture’s initiative from becoming a public controversy, stressing that the team will pay special attention to potentially sensitive or disputed issues.

On July 3, House Speaker Puan Maharani urged the Ministry of Culture to ensure that no historical facts are omitted or distorted in the ongoing national history rewriting project.

"We must respect and acknowledge that writing history should be done as clearly and transparently as possible, without disadvantaging any party or erasing their historical footprint," she said.

Her remarks came in response to Culture Minister Fadli Zon’s decision to continue the history revision initiative, despite calls from several lawmakers to postpone or halt the project.
