“Not only will the 1998 tragedy be featured in the national history rewriting, but also ancient art found in Leang-Leang Cave, Maros,” he informed during the Gau Maraja Leang-Leang Cultural Festival here on Friday.
He said that the prehistoric images of Leang-Leang Cave have already gained recognition from international researchers and deserve to be formally documented as part of the nation’s history.
According to Zon, historical information must be recorded and published so that future generations understand the past.
Meanwhile, Maros District Head HAS Chaidir Syam expressed pride that Leang-Leang would be included in the history revision initiative.
He explained that the district held the Gau Maraja Leang-Leang Cultural Festival to spotlight and revitalize Leang-Leang’s cultural and historical legacy on the international stage.
The festival, held from July 3–5, 2025, features a range of artistic and cultural activities, including an international symposium on Leang-Leang’s prehistoric heritage, which has drawn participation from delegates from 11 countries.

As part of the festival, the Maros Museum also showcased traditional badik daggers, some of which were used during Indonesia’s fight for independence.
In the evening, the Leang-Leang Geopark was decorated with a colorful lighting installation, which enhanced the ambiance of the ancient cave.
One visitor, Nur Kholishah, said that she had traveled from Makassar to take photos with the illuminated prehistoric wall art.
“We came here to enjoy the evening vibe at Leang-Leang and to learn about its history,” she added.
