Karawang, West Java (ANTARA) - Authorities, on Saturday morning, started applying an 18-kilometer (km) contraflow traffic scheme on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road following congested traffic flow during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

State-owned toll road operator PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol's VP Corporate Secretary and Legal Ria Marlinda Paallo noted in her statement that the contraflow traffic scheme on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road started from KM 47 to KM 65 in the direction of Cikampek.

She remarked that the contraflow was applied at the police's discretion, as traffic had occurred at 6:35 a.m. local time.

Initially, the contraflow was applied from KM 55 to 65, but it was extended from KM 47 to KM 65 at 7 a.m. local time.

Contraflow is a traffic management system that changes the normal direction of vehicle flow on toll roads. This system requires motorists to go in the opposite direction and is only implemented at the discretion of the police.

Paallo stated that during the Christmas and New Year holiday season, PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol has optimized transaction services at the Cikampek Utama Toll Gate by operating a total of 18 toll booths.

Some 16 mobile reader units were also prepared to increase transaction capacity, she remarked.

The preparation aimed to ease traffic flow on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road, especially the flow heading towards the Cipali Toll Road during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

During the year-end period, PT Jasamarga Transjawa Tol advised road users to plan their trips, ensure their vehicles are in top condition, have sufficient balances in their e-money card, refuel their cars beforehand, and bring food provisions to avoid crowds in the rest area.

"Always be careful when driving, obey traffic signs, and follow the officers' directions on the field," Paallo stated.
