During the inauguration of four type A terminals by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Purworejo, Central Java, on Tuesday, Sumadi said that the revitalization of terminals will boost people's interest in using public transportation and help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
"The newly inaugurated type A terminals also function as spaces for social, artistic, and cultural activities for people. At the Purworejo Terminal, the first floor is functioning as a space for the exhibition of people's crafts," he noted.
The four type A terminals inaugurated by Jokowi comprised Purworejo and Mendolo terminals in Central Java and Purboyo and Patria terminals in East Java. The inauguration event was held at Purworejo Terminal.
The Purworejo Terminal was built at a cost of Rp35 billion (around US$2.25 million) and spans an area of 12,315 square meters. It has a building area of 2,378.1 square meters and can serve 615 passengers with a total of 105 buses per day.
The Mendolo Terminal was built at a cost of Rp20 billion (around US$1.29 million). It covers an area of 29,319 square meters and has a building area of 7,742 square meters. The terminal can serve 2,090 passengers on a total of 280 buses per day.
The Purboyo Terminal, which covers an area of 28,719 square meters and has a building area of 11,230 square meters, was built at a cost of Rp29.8 billion (around US$1.92 million). It can serve 4,350 passengers on a total of 339 buses per day.
Meanwhile, the Patria Terminal was built at a cost of Rp66.6 billion (around US$4.3 million). It has an area of 14,932 square meters and a building area of 3,950 square meters. It is equipped to serve 4,344 passengers with 330 buses per day.
Sumadi said that the construction and revitalization of type A terminals in various regions is a priority program to improve inter-city, inter-province, and intra-province bus services.
From 2014 to 2023, five new terminals were built, and 75 existing terminals were revitalized.
In 2024, the Ministry of Transportation is targeting to complete the construction of seven terminals: Sumedang Terminal in West Java; Cepu, Magelang, Demak, and Bobotsari terminals in Central Java; Air Sebakul Terminal in Bengkulu; and Bimoku Terminal in East Nusa Tenggara.
Sumadi expressed the hope that the revitalization of terminals would improve safety, security, and services for the community.
In addition to their function of supporting land transportation services, terminals are also expected to support the improvement of the economies of MSMEs that are involved there.
