Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has, through its diplomacy, taken various concrete actions to respond to the challenge of climate change, according to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

While delivering the 2024 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Bandung, West Java, on Monday, she said Indonesia has shown its commitment and leadership in responding to climate change in various multilateral forums.

"Indonesia has been leading by example in reducing deforestation & forest fire rates, in rehabilitating mangrove forests and critical lands, and in targeting net zero emissions by 2060," she affirmed.

Marsudi remarked that Indonesia's concrete actions in responding to climate change were also demonstrated by becoming a co-initiator of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) along with Japan.

AZEC is a collaborative platform to encourage the achievement of net zero emissions in the region. AZEC partner countries apart from Indonesia and Japan are Australia, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Indonesia has received Japan's support for 24 energy transition projects as a concrete result of the summit that was held in Tokyo, Japan, in late 2023.

The energy transition projects that received support from Japan are cooperation with several parties, such as the state-run electricity company PT PLN (Persero), PPT Energy Trading Co Ltd, state-owned fertilizer holding firm Pupuk Indonesia, and the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN).

The minister also stated that Indonesia has various credible innovative financing mechanisms for energy transition, such as the Energy Transition Mechanism and Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), which had been launched on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali in 2022.

She underlined that the commitment and cooperation of all countries were deemed necessary in the efforts to address climate change.

To this end, Marsudi affirmed that Indonesia continues to encourage all countries to have a shared responsibility in combating climate change.
