Tourist interest in zoos, especially wildlife parks, is very high. The key is management.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has appealed to zoo managers to manage zoos seriously by paying more attention to animal health and fulfilling the rights of their employees.

He made the statement during the "Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno" in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Uno conveyed the statement in response to the situation at Medan Zoo, Medan, North Sumatra, which is reportedly experiencing fund shortage, making it difficult to buy feed for animals and pay employees.

Two Sumatran tigers have died at Medan Zoo in the last two months, namely Erha in November 2023 and Nurhaliza in December 2023.

According to the minister, zoos were among the tourist destinations that were busy with tourists during the 2023 Christmas and 2024 New Year holiday period. Therefore, good management is the key to attracting more tourists to zoos.

"Tourist interest in zoos, especially wildlife parks, is very high. The key is management," he said.

He affirmed that the government is ready to help the zoo manager get support from investors keen to invest in Indonesia's green tourism.

"The government is ready to facilitate; there are many investors who want to invest because of the green tourism concept. I already have three or five investors who are interested," he said.

Earlier, Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution said that his side acknowledged that there is an issue at Medan Zoo, located on Bunga Rampai IV Street, Simalingkar B village, Medan Tuntungan sub-district.

"There is a little problem about the cooperation mechanism," he informed late last year.

The mayor affirmed that he will also seek support from the management of the Indonesian Safari Park to improve Medan Zoo's management.
