"We are targeting 30 thousand participants from 180 countries, 250 organizations, most of which are members of WWC. There are 214 sessions that are divided into thematic, and others," the Ministry's Deputy for Environmental and Forestry Management, Nani Hendiarti, noted in a statement in Jakarta, Thursday.
WWF is an international forum whose approach is comprehensive, not only in terms of thematic discussions but also in the regional and political aspects.
To support the implementation of the 10th WWF, President Jokowi has issued Presidential Decree Number 1 of 2023. Until now, preparations were made in parallel by conducting a coordination meeting to check the readiness.
As a reinforcement, Coordinating Minister for Investment and Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has issued a Decree on the Supporting Work Team of the 10th WWF Organizing Committee in 2024.
Furthermore, Hendiarti stated that the problem of water has become a global concern in recent years. In reality, this topic was considered during the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.
"COP28 urges countries and parties to accelerate rapid action at scale and at all levels, from local to global, to significantly reduce climate-related water scarcity, increase resilience to water-related disasters, and realize climate-resilient water supplies and access to affordable potable water," Hendiarti remarked.
According to Hendiarti, the issue of water is important, as it is related to food security. Therefore, the 10th WWF, with the main theme of "Water for Shared Prosperity," became a momentum for Indonesia to take real action for the international community.
"Indonesia successfully hosted G20 and AIS Forum summits last year. Implemented and substantively successful. Indonesia has the international trust to host the 10th WWF this year and work with the WWC to organize it," she remarked.
Six sub-themes in the implementation of the 10th WWF are water security and prosperity; water for human and nature; disaster risk reduction and management; governance, cooperation and hydro-diplomacy; sustainable water finance; and knowledge and innovation.
"WWF's substance discussion will center on this issue. A political process involves the head of state, ministers, and others. This will yield the highest product, a ministerial declaration, which is a living document and a legacy of the 10th WWF," she explained.
In addition to the six thematic issues or themes that have been determined, three related issues will be proposed in the Ministerial Declaration. First, water services funding to mitigate climate change-induced water-related disasters in the Archipelagic & Island States; second, the establishment of a Center of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience; and third, the proposal of World Lake Day.
In the context of water management, various efforts have been coordinated by the Coordinating Ministry of Marves, including the management of the Citarum watershed, the reduction of marine plastic waste, and the rescue of 15 priority lakes.
