"In 2024, we will hold elections, as mandated by the 1945 Constitution. It should be noted that the Constitution affirms that elections should be held every five years in a direct, public, free, confidential, honest, and fair manner," she remarked in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Maharani made the statement in her opening speech for DPR's Session Period III of the 2023-2024 Year Period at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta.
In her speech, Maharani reiterated that the people of Indonesia uphold the sovereignty of their country by holding and participating in elections to choose their preferred candidates for president and vice president as well as for representatives at the DPR and Regional Representatives Council (DPD).
"An election does not merely serve as a constitutional way for political parties to secure seats of power, but it also provides an opportunity for the people to have a better, more convenient, and more prosperous life," she stressed.
Maharani said she believes that by participating in an election, the people can pave the way for elevating their living standards. An election constitutes a means for the people to live a more comfortable and prosperous life, she noted.
The house speaker then emphasized the need to ensure that the people can properly exercise their voting rights, noting that no parties should disrupt and manipulate their rights.
She then urged all state institutions and apparatuses to share the same strong commitment to making the 2024 General Elections a successful festival of democracy.
Maharani reiterated that the 1945 Constitution mandates that an election must be organized by upholding the principles of it being direct, free, confidential, honest, and fair.
