Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecast rainstorms in most Indonesian provinces on Thursday, including Banten, West Java, Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and Bali.

Meanwhile, Aceh, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, and West Nusa Tenggara were asked to remain alert for thunderstorms, according to information on BMKG’s official website in Jakarta on Thursday.

All provinces in Kalimantan as well as North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, Maluku, and West Papua were also warned of potential thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, potentially strong winds with a velocity of more than 45 kilometers per hour were forecast in provinces such as Aceh, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Java, West Nusa Tenggara, North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, and Maluku.

Deputy of meteorology at BMKG, Guswanto, said that Tropical Cyclone Anggrek (Orchid) may increase to category two, which could cause high waves in several Indonesian waters.

“(We) predict that the Orchid Tropical Cyclone might increase from category one to category two in 24 hours and is moving south,” he added.

The cyclone, which may indirectly impact Indonesia’s weather, has been detected in the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu.

The cyclone could lead to the formation of high ocean waves measuring an estimated 1.25 to 2.5 meters in the south and west parts of the Sunda Strait, western waters of Mentawai Islands to Lampung, Bengkulu to Enggano Island, and the waters south of Banten to Central Java.

Even bigger waves measuring 2.5 to 4 meters may be recorded in the western Indian Ocean west of Mentawai Islands to Lampung, as well as the Indian Ocean south of Banten.
