Jakarta (ANTARA) - Thirty-three Indonesian police officers received awards from the United Nations Police (UNPOL) for their contributions to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

In a statement from the National Police (Polri) on Thursday, Police Inspector General Krishna Murti, head of Polri's international relations division, said that the awards were presented in a ceremony in Juba, South Sudan, where UNMISS Police Commissioner Christine Fossen lauded police officers from Indonesia.

Fossen said that their roles made real contributions to UNMISS.

"The role of UNPOL Indonesia in UNMISS is crucial in the fields of administration, capacity building, and operations to secure the upcoming elections in South Sudan," she said.

During the mission, the Polri officers became role models for other peacekeepers, Murti said in the statement.

They also helped evacuate victims during a tribal conflict in Malakal on May 28, 2023, trained local police officers, confiscated hundreds of civilian arms and sharp weapons, and led anti-drug operations.

They also participated in inter-tribal peace campaigns, built water boreholes, and donated sports equipment to local communities.

Murti said that the awards have strengthened Indonesia's commitment to play an active role in the mission.

"Indonesia is committed to playing an active role in UN peacekeeping missions, and we will continue to prepare the necessary personnel," he added.
