Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's national basketball team on Tuesday held its first training session for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Sixteen of the 24 players summoned to defend the red and white team took part in the first training at GOR Soemantri Brodjonegoro here on Tuesday.

Several players did not join the session due to injury or conflicting schedules with their clubs.

"We focused on nine players, the majority of whom are young and inexperienced, because we saw that they have good potential but have yet (to get) the opportunity to play in the international event, such as Abraham (Damar Grahita) and (Brandon) Jawato," the national team's manager, Rony Gunawan, informed.

It is hoped that more playing hours will help develop the mentality of young players who will later join their more experienced teammates for the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 qualifiers, Gunawan said.

Serbian Milos Pejic has been entrusted with leading the national team and will be supported by Johannis Winar and Ismael as assistant coaches.

The FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers will be played in three windows: February 2024, November 2024, and February 2025. A total of 24 teams will compete to qualify for the region's flagship men's national team competition.

Indonesia will compete with Thailand, Australia, and South Korea in Group A.

Pejic's team will start the group stage against Thailand at Nimibutr Stadium, Bangkok, on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
