Jakarta (ANTARA) - Investment Minister and Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Head Bahlil Lahadalia estimates that battery production for electric cars can reach 100 gigawatt hours (GWh), so it can meet the needs of 1.7 million electric cars.

"Perhaps, in 2027, approximately 100 gigawatts will be produced, which is the same as 1.7 million electric cars," Lahadalia remarked after exercising his voting rights at polling station (TPS) 04 Duren Tiga, South Jakarta, Wednesday.

On this occasion, Lahadalia invited the public to be proud, as Indonesia has succeeded in becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to produce batteries for electric cars.

Currently, Lahadalia noted that the production capacity of batteries for electric cars in Indonesia is around 10 GWh.

The minister explained that with this production capacity, Indonesia can meet the needs of 170 thousand cars.

"Now, battery consumption in Indonesia, our (electric) car production capacity, has not yet reached 100 thousand," he pointed out.

However, Lahadalia highlighted that Indonesia will conduct expansion in March 2024 to increase the battery production capacity to 20 GWh.

“In March, expansion starts. As soon as the first factory finishes production, they immediately expanded," he said.

The minister made this statement in connection with the assessment made by Managing Director of the Energy Shift Institute Putra Adhiguna that Indonesia needs to increase its battery production capacity.

It is estimated that it will only have 10 GWh, or less than 0.4 percent of the global battery production capacity in 2024.

"The Energy Shift Institute estimates that this year, Indonesia will only have 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) or less than 0.4 percent of the global battery production capacity of 2,800 GWh," Adhiguna stated in Jakarta on Friday (Feb 9).

Adhiguna remarked that so far, the added value of various Indonesian nickel products ranges from two to 11 times of the raw product. However, this value is still far below the added value of more than 60 times if it reaches battery production.
