Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi met with the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, on Friday to discuss workable measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the transportation sector.
"I hope that Indonesia and Japan will find ways to further strengthen and broaden bilateral cooperation in various sectors, especially transportation," Sumadi said in a statement received from his office in Jakarta.
On Friday, he apprised Yasushi about his meeting with a vice minister from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) in January this year, during which Indonesia and Japan signed a memorandum of cooperation reaffirming their commitment to stepping up transportation cooperation.
The minister then drew attention to priority Indonesia-Japan projects, namely the East-West Line of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Jakarta, the Patimban Port in West Java's Subang, and the Proving Ground in West Java's Bekasi.
He said that President Joko Widodo is giving special attention to the development of MRT's East-West Line. According to Sumadi, a loan agreement for the project will be signed in March 2024.
"I would like to thank Japan for our agreement on conducting a groundbreaking ceremony for MRT East-West Line in August (2024). This means that I, together with Mr. President, will get to witness the moment," he said.
The minister also expressed the hope that the Japanese government will fully commit to making transportation infrastructure projects in Indonesia a success.
"For Patimban Port, in particular, we are hoping for Japan's participation in developing a backup area," he informed.
He further revealed his plan to fly to Tokyo in April this year to hold a meeting with the Japanese government and potential investors on the application of transit-oriented development along the North-South and East-West lines of MRT Jakarta.
"We have been coordinating with Japan's MLIT and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) to prepare for the business forum (meeting)," he added.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Yasushi hailed the two countries' ongoing transportation projects, especially those related to the MRT and Patimban Port.
He expressed his belief that the projects would be highly beneficial for Indonesia and Japan, adding that he will urge related Japanese companies to follow the applicable procedures to ensure the success of the projects.
