Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has asked regional governments to intensify the dissemination of information on regulations on the prevention and handling of violence at educational units.

KPAI Commissioner Aris Adi Leksono, when contacted here on Tuesday, said that one of the regulations is the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister’s Regulation Number 46 of 2023 on the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Educational Unit Environment.

He made the statement in response to a case of the alleged bullying of a student of an international school in South Tangerang, Banten, by his seniors, including the son of a celebrity.

The KPAI has also encouraged the formation of a task force whose members will be drawn from regional government agencies.

“Therefore, it will be comprehensive, based on the child protection system, as well as sustainable in preventing and handling violence in educational units,” he said.

In addition, the government has been urged to assist the Team for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Educational Units by providing several types of training.

They include training on the standard operating procedures for violence prevention and handling, training on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, training on child-friendly educational units, and training on positive discipline.

It has been deemed essential for the government to advance a character education curriculum that is based on training, habituation, examples, and cultivation of cultures.

“Apart from that, supported by competent counseling teachers as well as proportional in terms of student development ratio. If necessary, the teachers’ child protection competency should be strengthened,” he said.

Earlier, news of the bullying of a student of an international high school in South Tangerang had circulated on social media. The alleged bullies were the victim's seniors.

The victim is currently receiving treatment for burn wounds and bruises inflicted on him.

Meanwhile, the school said the bullying occurred outside its premises.
