Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Dumai Naval Base in Indonesia's Riau province foiled a robbery attempt by four pirates on MV African Halcyon while it was anchored in Malacca Strait's Dumai waters on February 29, 2024.

The pirates jumped into the sea and escaped on a speedboat as soon as the Dumai Naval Base's first fleet quick response team members arrived on the scene, according to a press statement released by the Indonesian Navy.

As per the press statement received by ANTARA here on Friday, the quick response team departed on a sea rider boat shortly after the general cargo vessel sounded a danger alarm.

The alarm was sounded by several crew members of MV African Halcyon, which sails under the Bahamas flag, after they saw the four pirates trying to climb on board their ship's deck.

After thwarting the pirates' attempt to rob the ship, the Indonesian Navy launched a probe into the incident.

Several navy personnel also remained on standby near the area where the ship was anchoring, according to a press statement issued by the navy.

The Malacca Strait remains vulnerable to incidents of robbery and piracy, as well as other forms of maritime crimes, including human trafficking and smuggling of lobster seeds.

ANTARA reported earlier that Indonesia is aware of the situation. Therefore, the Indonesian Navy is continuing to increase its capabilities to deal with maritime crimes, as demonstrated by its repeated successes in foiling such crimes.
