Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning Minister/head of the National Land Agency (ATR/BPN), Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), has emphasized that land and spatial planning policies have contributed to building a capable defense system.

"Land, spatial planning, and defense are mutually sustainable elements, including in efforts to improve the welfare of the Indonesian people," he said, according to a statement released by the ministry here on Saturday.

He delivered the remarks at the launch of the Indo-Pacific Strategic Intelligence (IPSI) think tank.

According to him, the ATR Ministry/BPN, through its policies, and other sectors, such as defense, have a collective role in maintaining the sovereignty and security of Indonesian territories.

"We must strengthen the location of defense infrastructure, military posts, border areas, and the Nusantara capital city. We have to monitor the thousand kilometers of border areas. We want to work together with friendly countries so that they both respect each other's border areas," he said.

The ministry is also seeking to ensure the protection of resources on existing land, he added.

"We protect them because all of Indonesia's resources have high economic value, which can also be used to build our defense," he said.

AHY also touched on the importance of the food sector in supporting Indonesia's resilience and economy.

In connection to this, AHY, through his authority in the agrarian, land, and spatial planning sector, called for the realization of Indonesia's independence in the food sector.

"The need for food is increasing; we do not want to be too dependent on producer countries that we usually import foodstuffs from. We want to have resilience and independence in the food and the economy sector because we want to become a nation that stands alone," he stated.
