"February is still the low season, and the number of days is relatively lower than the number of days in January. Apart from that, extreme weather and high waves are still affecting flights and shipping," Acting Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti stated in Jakarta, Monday.
Widyasanti remarked that the number of domestic air transport passengers departing in February 2024 reached 4.7 million, down 2.65 percent as compared to January 2024. Meanwhile, the number of passengers departing overseas fell 4.66 percent to 1.4 million people.
The decrease in the number of passengers occurred at all main airports observed, namely Kualanamu-Medan Airport, by 20.99 percent; Hasanuddin-Makassar, 12.64 percent; Juanda-Surabaya, 12.34 percent; Ngurah Rai-Denpasar, 12.07 percent; and Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang, 2.21 percent.
The largest number of domestic passengers was recorded at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang Airport, reaching 1.3 million people, or 28.62 percent of the total domestic passengers, followed by Juanda-Surabaya, with 357.4 thousand people, or 7.60 percent of the total domestic passengers.
Similar to the number of passengers, the number of goods transported using domestic air transportation decreased by 3.92 percent to 51.5 thousand tons.
During the January-February 2024 period, the number of domestic passengers was recorded at 9.5 million people while the number of international passengers was 2.9 million people, an increase of 2.06 percent and 34.17 percent respectively as compared to conditions during the same period in 2023. Likewise, the number of goods transported rose 10.98 percent to 105.1 thousand tons.
The BPS noted that the number of domestic sea transport passengers departing in February 2024 was recorded at 1.5 million people, down 9.68 percent as compared to January 2024. The number of goods transported also fell 1.55 percent to 28.1 million tons.
Cumulatively, during the January-February 2024 period, the number of passengers reached 3.2 million people, or an increase of 11.17 percent as compared to the same period in 2023, while the number of goods transported fell 0.36 percent or reached 56.7 million tons.
