Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Alue Dohong, along with Japanese Vice Minister for Global Environmental Affairs Yutaka Matsuzawa, witnessed the signing of the Implementation Arrangement on the Feasibility Study on Large-Scale Waste Treatment Facility in Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwakarta Areas.
The signing was carried out by Secretary of the Directorate General of PSLB3 of the LHK Ministry, Sayid Muhadhar, with Director General for Resource Circulation Environmental Regeneration and Material Cycles Bureau of the Ministry of Environment of Japan (MoEJ), Sumikura Ichiro.
"We asked our side to immediately prepare initial steps for preparation and communicate with partners at the Japanese Ministry of the Environment to realize this cooperation," Dohong noted in a statement from his office on Thursday.
According to Dohong, the feasibility study will be conducted to develop the Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwakarta (Bekarpur) Regional Waste Processing Site; provide technical assistance; and increase human resource capacity for the regional government.
The signing of the implementation arrangements is part of the series of High-Level Dialogue meeting activities between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the MoEJ for a mid-term review of the implementation of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in Environment that was signed by Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, and Japanese Minister of the Environment, Nishimura Akihiro, on August 30, 2022, in Bali.
The high-level meeting discussed five issues, namely climate change and carbon trading; waste management, including e-waste; Marine Plastic and the International Legally Binding Instrument; environmental management; and biodiversity conservation, Dohong remarked.
Japan will also follow up on the agreement to assist Indonesia on electronic waste handling in the form of feasibility studies, technology transfer, and capacity building for a program period of four years, or the 2024-2028 period, he added.
