Jakarta (ANTARA) - Social Affairs Minister Tri Rismaharini visited Tana Toraja District, South Sulawesi Province, to directly oversee the distribution of assistance needed by people in Manggau Village hit by landslides.

According to a press release received here from the Social Affairs Ministry on Wednesday, Rismaharini paid a visit to a refugee shelter and participated in the handover of compensation to the heirs of dead victims.

"I offered those who became orphans to go to the ministry's social centers in Makassar or Manado that can guarantee them food. However, it depends on them whether to go or not. Most importantly, we are providing them with compensation and staple goods," she pointed out.

The minister remarked that the government is giving compensation worth Rp15 million (US$924) to each of the 20 heirs of deceased victims and Rp5 million (US$308) each to two injured victims.

Earlier, on Saturday (April 13), landslides caused by heavy rains swept several regions in Tana Toraja, resulting in a total of 20 casualties.

In response, the Ministry of Social Affairs immediately distributed initial aid on the same day through the Tana Toraja Social Affairs Office, followed by logistics assistance delivered from several warehouses in Makassar City.

The assistance, worth Rp713.6 million (US$44 thousand) in total, included rollable tents, portable family tents, multipurpose tents, portable toilets, generators, family kitchen tools, beds, blankets, mattresses, family kits, kids wear, ready-to-eat meals, children's meals, and rice.

To cater to the basic needs of survivors, the Tana Toraja Social Affairs Office erected a public kitchen on Sunday (April 14) at the house of a local. The public kitchen can produce 1,200 meals per day.
