"Based on our data in collaboration with the largest telecommunication operator in this country, there were more than 242 million people movements," he remarked at the closing of the 2024 Integrated Eid Transport Post in Jakarta on Friday.
Sumadi noted that the 2024 Eid transportation during the homecoming and return flow periods went smoothly across all modes of transportation.
He believes that this success could not be separated from the leadership of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) who provided direction regarding the implementation of Eid transportation.
The minister also attributed the success to the collaboration and support of various parties, such as the National Police (Polri), Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), and other related stakeholders.
However, Sumadi stated that the president had left some notes for improvement, including regarding the long traffic jam at Merak Port and on the Cipali Toll Road.
"Traffic conditions at Ketapang Port had run smoothly. However, we need to carry out further study to improve the condition at Merak Port and Cipali Toll Road for next year's homecoming," he remarked.
Earlier, a survey by the Ministry of Transportation, through the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) along with Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Telkomsel, transportation experts, and academics, showed that as many as 193.6 million Indonesians had the potential to travel during the 2024 Eid holiday.
On the same occasion, Head of the National Police Traffic Corps, Inspector General Aan Suhanan, stated that 3,286 cases of traffic accidents were recorded during the homecoming and return flow, a decrease of eight percent from 3,561 cases in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the fatality rate during the Eid homecoming and return flow period also decreased by 12 percent, from earlier 534 deaths in 2023 to 469 deaths in 2024. However, the number of cases of serious injuries increased, with 590 recorded as compared to 444 cases in the previous year, Suhanan added.
He then drew attention to the fatal accident that claimed several lives at KM 58 on the Jakarta-Cikampek (Japek) toll road on April and a solo accident involving the Rosalia Indah bus at KM 370 of the Batang-Semarang toll road on April 11.
"This will be our evaluation for managing the risk of accidents for Eid homecoming next year," he stated.
