In a statement from his ministry received here on Wednesday, Pandjaitan underscored the dire need for collaboration between the government and various parties to maintain the sustainability of water resources in Indonesia.
This is because challenges and issues related to water resources in the world are getting increasingly complex.
He noted that water has become a global concern amidst the widespread impacts of climate change. Moreover, conflicts of interest have increased due to the decreasing availability of accessible water, both in terms of quantity and quality.
"Therefore, the sustainability of water resources is the responsibility of all parties," he said.
Pandjaitan, who concurrently serves as chairman of the National Water Resources Council, called on members of the council to participate in providing concrete solutions at the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) that will be held in Bali on May 18-25, 2024.
"I hope the National Water Resources Council can participate, especially in giving concrete, innovative, and applicable input," he remarked.
During the General Assembly of the World Water Council (WWC) in Senegal in 2022, Indonesia was chosen to host the 10th WWF, themed "Water for Shared Prosperity."
The WWF is an international meeting of stakeholders in the water resources sector, such as governments, parliaments, political leaders, multilateral institutions, politicians, academicians, civil society, and business players, among others.
For the upcoming forum to be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, the Indonesian government has four missions, namely first realizing a centralized network in the Asia-Pacific region that is specially focused on the issues of water security, climate change, and environmental research.
The second mission is to create relations with institutions, academicians, research organizations, and other international institutions. Meanwhile, the third mission is realizing a consortium that focuses on data centers.
The last mission is coordinating and implementing various multi-party efforts to create a declaration or initiative on global water issues.
Through the forum, the Indonesian government is also proposing the establishment of World Lake Day to maintain the sustainability of water resources.
