Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo has disclosed that the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) will open a new office for representatives in the Asian region in Jakarta this year.

"We are glad that FIBA has a commitment, and opening their office in Indonesia — especially in Jakarta — is a form of appreciation for Indonesia," he remarked after holding a meeting with FIBA executive committee member Ingo Weiss in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said that the opening of the FIBA office reflects higher international trust in Indonesia, especially in Indonesian basketball.

After it sets up its office in Jakarta, FIBA will assist the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) to improve Indonesia's basketball quality, he informed.

"FIBA will deploy a dedicated team and FIBA is committed to accompany Perbasi to improve the human resources, such as coaches, referees, and early-age development programs," he added.

The minister said that FIBA is targeting to open the new office, which will be located in the Sudirman area, by the end of 2024. However, he called for faster preparations so that the office can be opened earlier.

"I asked for the paperwork to be accelerated… Insha Allah (God willing), in two months there will be an official FIBA office in Indonesia," he informed.

Ariotedjo noted that the new FIBA office marks a new history for Indonesian basketball because currently, FIBA representative offices in the Asian region are only located in Singapore and China.

Meanwhile, the chairperson of Perbasi's executive committee, Danny Kosasih, said that the opening of the new office is a form of cooperation between the association and FIBA to develop Indonesian basketball.

"This is a very good thing. We welcome FIBA's trust in Indonesia," he added.
