Central Java acting governor Nana Sudjana said here on Wednesday that his side fully supports the student-level championship, which will be attended by participants from seven Asian countries, including host Indonesia.
"I support this international event. I want Central Java and Semarang to be lively. This event will help revive Central Java," he said during a dialogue with the Youth and Sports Ministry.
The 2024 Asian School Badminton Championship is planned to be held in the badminton court of Semarang University (USM).
Sudjana said that the provincial government is currently seeking to boost the sports and tourism sector through the 2024 "Specta" Jateng sports tourism program, which covers 14 sports.
"We are also promoting sports in Central Java. We will hold the Specta Jateng with 14 sports being competed. In the future, it is expected to become an annual event," he informed.
The Specta Jateng event is expected to help advance sports, tourism, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), he added.
He said that his side and the Youth and Sports Ministry will jointly serve on the organizing committee for the badminton event, which will also involve both school and university students from Semarang city.
Meanwhile, assistant deputy of the ministry's Sports Achievement and Development Center, Muhammad Aziz Ariyanto, said that both sides have good cooperation and experience in organizing national and international events.
In 2019, he noted, the two successfully held the Asian School Games.
"This year, we are back in Semarang again. The Asian School Badminton Championship is an event for students," he added.
