Around 2,500 delegates of the 10th World Water Forum are taking part in Segara Kerthi, a Balinese traditional water purification ritual, on Serangan Beach within the Kura-Kura Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Denpasar, Bali Province.
"This ritual is a means to ask for blessings, so that the sea, as a water resource, can be clean both in the physical and non-physical terms," Chairman of Parisadha Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali, I Nyoman Kenak, remarked on the sidelines of the ritual on Saturday.
Prior to the ritual, the national committee of the forum distributed typical Balinese cloth, waist scarf, and udeng (a male headband), to the participating delegates.
Meanwhile, President Commissioner of the Kura-Kura Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Tontowi Yahya noted that the 2,500 delegates had initially registered themselves with the organizers of the ritual that marks the start of the international triennial forum.
He underlined that the water-related theme of the ritual is relevant to the World Water Forum that places emphasis on the sustainability of water resources.
Yahya also remarked that the ritual is being held to seek God's blessings to make the forum a successful and safe event.
"This (ritual) is the Balinese people's way to ask God for blessings," he stated.
The ritual began at around 3 p.m. local time under the command of four sulinggih, Hindu religious leaders.
The holding of Segara Kerthi will be followed by Tumpek Uye, a ritual of veneration of animals.
According to the plan, the delegates will also participate in the release of one thousand turtle babies, one thousand birds, and some turtles.
Furthermore, a joint prayer and performances of Panasar Mask Dance, Sang Hyang Jaran, Sang Hyang Dedari, Baris Cerekuak, Rejang Putri Maya, and Sidakarya Mask Dance will complement the rituals.
Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, and Acting Bali Governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya are also the attendees in the series of events.
