Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo expressed his condolences over the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage following a helicopter crash in northwest Iran on Sunday.

"Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, deep condolences for the death of the President of Iran, His Excellency Sayyed Ebrahim Raisi and the accompanying delegation that accompanied him during the accident in Iran," President Widodo said on his official X account @jokowi on Monday.

He also prayed for the bereaved families and the Iranian people.

"I offer my sincere prayers to the bereaved families and the Iranian people," said Widodo, who had met with Raisi at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java in May 2023.

The helicopter carrying President Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and some officials crashed in Varzaqan, East Azerbaijan province, on Sunday.

The chopper crashed while President Raisi and his entourage were on their way to Tabriz city after inaugurating Qiz Qalasi Dam in the Khoda Afarin region of Iran's East Azerbaijan province, which borders the Republic of Azerbaijan on Saturday.

IRNA, Iran's official news agency, reported that President Raisi died in the accident. This was confirmed by local officials who rushed directly to the scene.
