The disaster emergency measures in Agam and Tanah Datar districts have been running well.Agam, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and First Lady Iriana on Tuesday reviewed the situation in an area affected by cold lava flows from Mount Marapi in Agam district, West Sumatra province.
The President and his entourage took off from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta, at 6:30 a.m. on board the presidential aircraft and arrived in Bukik Batabuah village around 10 a.m. local time.
"The disaster emergency measures in Agam and Tanah Datar districts have been running well. The measures include the evacuation of victims and the handling of refugees," Widodo said after arriving at the village, which was utterly ravaged by the May 11, 2024, floods.
During his visit, Widodo also reviewed the process of debris clean-up and inspected a Bailey bridge set up as an emergency structure. He also reviewed the ongoing construction of emergency roads and some other bridges.
The head of state next paid a visit to emergency tents sheltering hundreds of affected residents on Batu Taba field.
Later, he distributed aid to affected residents. During the aid disbursal, First Lady Iriana greeted some refugees inside their tents.
President Widodo was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Muhadjir Effendy; Presidential Military Secretary, Major General Rudy Saladin; commander of the Presidential Security Guard, Major General Achiruddin; and an official from his secretariat.
West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah and leaders of several West Sumatran regions, military camps, and regional police were also present during the President's visit.
Flash floods and lava flows were recorded in several sub-districts of Agam district, Tanah Datar district, Padang Panjang city, Padang Pariaman district, and Padang city on May 11.
The disasters claimed at least 67 lives, according to data released by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on May 16.
