Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry underscored the need for a comprehensive strategy and integrated cooperation among stakeholders to accelerate forest and environmental rehabilitation, especially in facing the dynamics of forest management in Java.

"The success of forest and land rehabilitation on the island of Java involving the community has made a real contribution to improving the environment and forest functions and local economic welfare," the ministry's Secretary General, Bambang Hendroyono, stated here on Thursday.

Speaking at the "Ekoregion Jawa" working meeting held in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Wednesday (June 26), Hendroyono remarked that forest and land rehabilitation can support the achievement of Indonesia's Forest and Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030.

He explained that sustainable restoration of the forest ecosystem in Java must focus on the existing regulations without forgetting the aspects of best practices and effectiveness.

With this strategy, he explained that the policy to rehabilitate the forest and environment would be guaranteed in terms of implementation.

He noted that the forest recovery plan for Java cannot be separated from the factors of the forests' configuration and characteristics.

Hendroyono drew attention to the fact that forest and land rehabilitation policies in Java refer to the 2022–2032 Forest and Land Rehabilitation General Plan (RURHL) by handling critical, post-disaster, eroded lands, as well as lands with sediments.

On that occasion, Governor of Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X conveyed the importance of the regional heads' commitment to enforcing environmental laws.

"In our efforts to create a better world for all, we can also re-examine the local wisdom and ancestral heritage, understand its essence, and find its relevance to the challenges and opportunities we are facing today. Perhaps, our ancestors already have the solution," he remarked.
