Jakarta (ANTARA) - A delegation from the National Library (Perpusnas) visited Russia as part of an effort to develop cooperation with libraries in that country.

According to a press release received in Jakarta on Thursday, the delegates were welcomed by the Indonesian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares, at the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow on Thursday.

They then discussed the current sociopolitical conditions in Russia.

Ambassador Jose said that Russia has now developed into a democratic country that allows its people to participate in politics and religion.

Therefore, he described the initiation of the National Library's collaboration with several libraries in Russia as very appropriate and lauded the effort.

Meanwhile, acting head of the National Library E. Aminudin Aziz, said that cooperation with Russia is a strategic effort by the National Library to develop international cooperation networks.

One of the aims of the cooperation is to identify and collect Indonesian manuscripts and Indonesian publications abroad.

The collaboration was initiated through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with three libraries, namely the Library for Foreign Literature and the Russian State Library in Moscow, as well as the V.V. Mayakovsky Central Public Library in St. Petersburg.

Aminudin informed that the delegates also visited Russia to take part in UNESCO's II International High-Level Conference on "The World Treasury of Native Languages: To Protect and Cherish" in St. Petersburg.

Their visit continued with a luncheon at the Indonesian embassy as well as a closing ceremony for the Indonesian Language Teaching Program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) in the afternoon.
