Indonesia's Riau Islands Province and China's Hubei Province on Tuesday explored the potential for cooperation in several sectors, including agriculture and tourism.
"We really appreciate the visit of Hubei province's delegates to Riau Islands. This is a very good initial step toward tighter relations between the two provinces," Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad said during a meeting with the Hubei delegation in Tanjungpinag city on Tuesday.
The Chinese delegation comprised Vice Director of the Hubei People's Standing Committee Liu Xiaoming, and other officials. Chinese Consul General Xu Chunjuan and attaché Cheng Tong also joined the visit.
Governor Ansar suggested that Riau Islands and Hubei establish sister province cooperation to open wider economic opportunities.
"We need to immediately hold a technical meeting to follow up on this cooperation exploration. It is necessary to discuss in detail viable cooperation schemes, especially those related to the agriculture and tourism sectors," he said.
The governor added that his province is also keen to forge collaboration in the education sector by initiating a student exchange program that will help the province boost the quality of its human resources.
He expressed the hope that the Hubei delegation would gain a good impression of Riau Islands during the visit.
"Hopefully, the delegation will help promote the beauty and potential of Riau Islands to Hubei residents to attract them to visit this province," he said.
Meanwhile, Head of Riau Islands' Tourism Office Guntur Sakti informed that during their visit, the Chinese delegates toured a pineapple plantation and some other agricultural areas in Bintan District.
They also paid a visit to several tourist destinations, such as Patung 1000 (A Thousand Statues) Vihara and Sata Sahasra Buddha Pagoda in Tanjungpinang City.
"They directly witnessed the potential and competitiveness of Riau Islands in the agriculture and tourism sectors. We are hoping for mutually beneficial cooperation between Riau Islands and Hubei," he added.
